About

The Joy of Sharing Science is a weekly magazine that explores the science behind interesting real life phenomena in a concise and easily understandable way. Each week, 4 articles regarding physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science are published. The aim of this project is to explore the science hidden in plain sight, evoke curiosity, and elevate scientific literacy. All of the authors are volunteer students from Uskudar American Academy and the magazines are created for educational purposes only. We currently hold 33 authors and are happy to welcome any high school students who wish to be a part of this project.

Our Origin Story

Uskudar American Academy's Math Department had started an event called "the question of the week". Each week a question was asked to the students and the people who answered correctly were announced as that week's "winners". I thought what a pity it was to not have something similar for natural sciences. Inspecting real-life phenomena that we usually tend to not notice concerning physics/biology/chemistry could be much more interesting than solving a math problem (I admit my bias here of course :)

That's when the idea of this magazine came to be. After making the announcement inviting people to be a part of this project, I thought nobody would join. Fortunately, I was very wrong. Students who were passionate about the natural sciences and wanted to share that beauty came together. Hence, Joy of Sharing Science became our name. We first started to publish JoSS in our school's google classroom dedicated to science. The first two editions were about COVID-19 as it had (and still has) greatly impacted everyone's lives. The first edition was published in 19 June 2020. As a reference to JoSS being created within the COVID-19 pandemic and how important it is to wear masks in this time of dire emergency, all the photographs of our team are taken with a mask.

As time passed, we wanted to let everyone be able to reach these articles and created this website. Our next goal is to take this project to other schools. If you have a passion for learning about our amazing Universe and find joy in sharing that knowledge, we would love having you among us. Whether you want to write a one time article or be a part of our team, reach out to us.

A huge thank you to all the authors who wrote the compelling articles that can be found the Past Issues section as well as to our kind advisor Yasemin Sarıhan, head of UAA's science department. Without you, JoSS wouldn't be possible.
